Crackdown against protesters in my neighbourhood
Yesterday was one of the worst days I've ever been through. I've lived in Bangkok all my life and today the streets that I've walked down thousands of times turned into a war zone. Many people in the area have left their homes in an attempt to avoid the conflict. I believed that it would soon come to a close, however, I was wrong. Early in the morning I was rudely awakened when the army moved in on protesters. They broke through the makeshift barriers with their armored vehicles and I'm sure they seriously injured or killed someone. Sometime after 6am the real fierce fighting broke out. I live in a top floor flat 200 metres away from the blockade. I could hear explosions in the background. There was smoke everywhere; I couldn't even see the horizon. The smell of burning was just phenomenal. I believe that the red shirts are justified and commend their efforts, but I don't think this is the way to cause a real change. The government is threatened by them and have fought back. Although the fighting has ceased for now, we're still under curfew and the government still has control of all tv networks. I only hope for some kind of non-violent resolution.
